The Pontifical Catholic University of Rio de Janeiro (PUC-Rio) is pleased to announce the creation of the “Guido Schäffer Chair of Sports, Faith, and Culture,” with the support of the National Conference of Bishops of Brazil. This initiative is a follow-up to the first global meeting of sports pastoral delegates from the Episcopal Conferences, held on May 16, 2024, at the Dicastery for Culture and Education in Rome.

One of the main challenges identified by the delegates was the need to deepen the academic and scientific reflection on the relationship between Faith (religion/spirituality) and Sports. The creation of the Chair aims to address this need, providing a solid academic foundation for the work of sports pastoral care and promoting dialogue between the Church and the world of sports, as expressed in the mission of the Dicastery for Culture and Education (Praedicate Evangelium, 154).
