PUC-Rio Theology Department

The Department of Theology at PUC-Rio is part of the Center of Theology and Human Sciences (CTCH), and constitutes, within the Catholic University of Rio de Janeiro, the center of critical reflection at the service of the theological reading of reality perceived from the Christian faith. Theology has its own way of capturing reality and also its own discourse, as a form of knowledge and science called to work together with the other sciences. Its pertinence comes from the Word of Christian Revelation interpreted in the ecclesial community, understood in its historical dynamism. Its relevance depends on its openness and capacity to thematically assume the demands of its historical moment, helping to build a just and fraternal world, according to the model of Jesus Christ. The Department of Theology intends to develop both the dimension of pertinence and the dimension of relevance of theological study. The studies developed by the Department of Theology at PUC-Rio are divided into two sections: Section A - Theology (undergraduate and graduate); and Section B - Religious Culture (undergraduate) and Distance Theological Initiation.

  • Graduation

    The Theology Graduate Program at PUC-Rio has been developing its activities since 1968. It offers the title of Bachelor of Theology, with ecclesiastical recognition (Holy See, 1972) and civil recognition (MEC, ordinance 2602, 25/07/2005). It is the result of an entire reflection carried out following the orientations of the Second Vatican Council, with the purpose of making the Christian faith tradition current, as a service to all of humanity, always working to overcome all kinds of violence and suffering caused by injustices. In this sense, the presence of Theology in the University is a precious heritage that is built on contact with other knowledges and sciences.

  • Post-Graduation

    The Postgraduate Program stricto sensu in Theology at PUC-Rio, with Master's and Doctorate degrees, has been running since 1972, with areas of concentration in Biblical Theology and Systematic-Pastoral Theology, and belongs to the Area of Sciences of Religion and Theology (Area 44) of the Coordination for the Improvement of Higher Education Personnel (CAPES), with the important task of training and coordinating the work of theologians and scientists of religion from all over the country. On May 20, 1972, the Holy See erected the Department of Theology into a Theology Faculty, granting it the power to confer ecclesiastical academic degrees of Master's and Doctorate in Theology.

  • Religious Culture

    The Religious Culture (CRE) has existed at PUC-Rio since its foundation, in 1941, always seeking to work for the integral formation of the human being, to overcome injustices, guided by the model of Jesus Christ. In 1968, with the creation of the Theology Department and its integration to the newly created Center of Theology and Human Sciences (CTCH), CRE became part of the Theology Department. With its curricular reform it has reiterated the importance of interdisciplinarity as well as the dialogue between Christian faith and modern rationality, with its four disciplines offered to the entire University. Since 2007, the CRE has grown increasingly in its mission at PUC-Rio, always seeking to respond to university demands, and since 2010 it has also offered courses in distance learning (online).

  • Theological Initiation at a Distance

    The Distance Learning Course for Theological Initiation began in 1997. Today it is offered in the semi-attendance and online modalities, in several places in the state and in the country, with the participation of professors, students and graduates of the Department, who also act as tutors for the classes. It is offered in partnership with PUC-Rio's Central Coordination of Extension (CCE). The course has been forming Christians to engage in the evangelizing mission, in the personal deepening in the experience of Jesus Christ, in the biblical-theological study, in the formation of Religious Education teachers, catechists, pastoral agents and others, providing them with a greater systematization of the contents of faith at the service of Evangelization. It also widens the horizon of extension of the Department, attending a contingent of interested people who are unable to access regular academic and face-to-face means.
